"Cacti and other xerophytic plants" magazine
of "Russian Society of Cacti and Succulents Study" The 5th anniversary of our magazine
Editors of "Cacti and other xerophytic plants" magazine congratulate their subscribers, all cactophyles and their own team with the 5th Anniversary and publication of the 20th Issue.
We have published many articles that we hope are interesting and useful since 1999 when our magazine was founded and the first issue was published. The articles discussed a broad range of topics in which collectors of cacti and other succulents may have an interest. From the beginning we kept in mind our limited resources so we made informational part of our magazine our main priority. We realized that it might divert part of audience which got used to multicolored publications with primarily illustrative purposes. At the same time we had a hope that it will draw attention of serious collectors who strive to research objects of their passion thoroughly. Our expectations have been fully met: our audience is quite limited nevertheless our magazine is in demand and it is the only Russian cacti magazine for amateurs reported by All-Russian Institute of Scientific and Technical Information.
Let's talk about our history. The idea about a magazine for amateurs emerged in the end of 1998, soon after the foundation of Russian Society of Cacti and Succulents Study. Among enthusiasts who started to work with the magazine from the beginning were Alexey Smirnov, who was an undergraduate at that time, very fond of "bottles" and "other" succulents; professor Nikolay Balashov (1924-2002), the expert in astrophytums; Valery Serovaysky, the President of the Society, Innokenty Sinev, the Editor-In-Chief of Russian-English magazine "Succulents". Later Peter Lapshin, Ph. D. in Biology, the leading expert in Crassulaceae, joined the team. We had a great help in the magazine publication from Andrey Sheremet, the leading Russian specialist in the genus Aloe, Victoria Andriytchuk, the Secretary of the society, and Andrey Tolmachev, the well-known collector and the Chairman of Auditing Committee of the society.
We will not list all authors whose articles were published in our magazine. We would like to congratulate them all with this anniversary and wish them good health and realization of their creative potential. The tables of contents of all published issues below will showcase the contributions of our authors without any further ado.
